Anele - A Story of Hope

Anele* was born in February 2022 to Nontobeko*, a Grade 12 learner living with HIV. As a vulnerable adolescent, Nontobeko has very little support in her own young life and struggles to take her life-saving medication consistently. Unknowingly, Nontobeko passed the virus onto her newborn baby – Anele. Two days before Anele was born, Nontobeko’s blood tests revealed a very high viral count, flagging Anele as exposed.

Without proper diagnosis, treatment and care, Anele is at risk of dying.
Anele’s situation was further complicated by several unclear PCR tests and Nontobeko’s shock and disbelief that her baby may be HIV positive.

Finally, in May, three months after precious Anele entered the world, she took her first dose of the medication to save and transform her life. The CHIVA team who initially flagged Nontobeko and Anele as a vulnerable mother and baby pair provided expert support for the healthcare team caring for them.

The journey, however, does not end here. As a teenage mother, Nontobeko will need ongoing psychological, emotional and social support as she comes to terms with her situation.

CHIVA will continue to assist the healthcare workers and their patients as they counsel them around the importance of taking medication and how best to do this, as well as monitoring both mother and baby clinically.

Our donors allow us to transform the lives of vulnerable children, like Anele, exposed to HIV and adolescents, like Nontobeko living with HIV, one mother and baby at a time.

Dina (Kaplan) Diamond

Dina Diamond is an experienced professional with many years’ experience predominantly in the financial services industry in South Africa, the African continent and the United States. Dina holds a BA cum laude (Unisa) PDM (Wits Business School), and MBA (Wits Business School).

Dina joined our SA Board of Trustees in 2019 and brings a wealth of financial and corporate experience to the Board.

She currently works in the International Private Banking team at Investec Bank. Previously, Dina headed up business development at a technology-centric company involved in financial services. She was also the Group Executive of Marketing, Communications and Business Development at a niche South African Bank.

Dina spent almost a decade with the Absa/ Barclays Group where she was involved in the Barclays Integration Team, headed up Marketing Operations and held the post of Chief of Staff for Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs supporting the Executive team with strategic projects and initiatives across a multitude of areas and disciplines across the wider Absa, Barclays Africa and Barclays Groups.

Dina is involved with various organisations and sits on various boards and committees. She is also a member of the International Women’s Forum with a presence in 36 nations across 6 continents.

Fiona Lindblom

Fiona joined the Board at CHIVA Africa in 2019. Fiona studied Law at Oxford University and started her career as a Barrister practicing in Chancery chambers before moving into financial services.

Most recently she has worked as Director, Legal, and Compliance, in a private equity real estate firm.

Shaun Wood

Shaun became a trustee for CHIVA Africa in February 2019. He is a South African qualified lawyer and holds the position of Chief Legal Officer at Cairn Capital, a leading European asset manager.

He contributes to the ongoing governance, operation, and fundraising initiatives of the UK board.

Shaun is based in London, but he grew up in South Africa and remains deeply committed to its ongoing fight against the HIV epidemic.

Dr Moherndran Archary

Dr Mo Archary is a Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist at King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban and the University of KwaZulu-Natal: Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine.

He graduated cum laude in 1996 from the University of Natal and has extensive experience of managing infectious diseases in children, including one of the largest cohorts of children and adolescents on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in the world.

Mo serves as the Chair of the paediatric sub-committee and on the Board of Trustees for the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, is the Co-Chair of the Paediatric Antiretroviral working group at the WHO and Vice chair of the Treatment Scientific committee in IMPAACT. He is also a member of the South African National Department of Health ARV and the Paediatric Third Line ART Review Committees.

Mo has published widely over many years, contributing significantly to our understanding of the impact of malnutrition on HIV treatment and outcomes in children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Lauren Jacobson

Lauren joined the board in 2019, and is a lawyer by training and built a successful legal career in South Africa, specialising in public interest and media law. Lauren has lectured in media law, ethics and public interest law and takes a special interest in furthering the cause of women and those disadvantaged in South Africa.

She has worked at a senior level in government, notably as policy advisor in the Constitutional Directorate as part of the team that set up the first UK Supreme Court, as well as advising on freedom of information, gender recognition, legal aid and human rights policy.

Lauren was Director of the One to One Children’s Fund and served on its Board of Trustees. She is a Trustee of Camden Law Centre and The Quartet of Peace Trust (UK).

Dr Karyn Moshal, Founder and Chairman

Dr Moshal is the founder of CHIVA Africa and CHIVA South Africa and has chaired the CHIVA Africa Board of Trustees since its registration as a charity in 2009. Born and raised in South Africa, Karyn graduated in medicine from the University of Cape Town in 1988.

She specialised in paediatrics in the UK at the Middlesex Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. She did a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases in the USA at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) before returning to the UK.

Karyn was a lecturer in paediatrics at the Royal Free Hospital and at UCL prior to her appointment to a Consultant post at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2004 in the Infectious Diseases Department and where she was Head of Department for Infectious Diseases from 2006-2010. She is part of the team which runs the GOSH HIV clinic, the oldest in Europe.

Karyn is the co-recipient of the CHIVAS Humanitarian Award in 2012 for her work with CHIVA Africa, the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club South Africa in October 2018 and the South African Chamber of Commerce Award.
