Dr. Karyn Moshal
Executive Director

Dr Moshal founded and has overall responsibility for the programme. This includes: programme development, design and strategy, overseeing its implementation, management of London and South African staff, liaison and planning with KZN DoH and UKZN, funders and prospective partners.

Dr. Moshal qualified from the University of Cape Town before training further in the UK and USA. She is currently London-based and a consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. She has extensive experience in paediatric HIV care and is part of the team which runs the Great Ormond Street Hospital paediatric HIV clinic, one of the largest and oldest (est. 1991) in Western Europe. She is a fourth generation South African who grew up in KZN.

Dr. Thilo Govender
Deputy Director

Dr Thilo Govender completed her medical degree from the University of Natal in 1992 and completed her internship at King Edward VIII Hospital. She went on to work in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health and obtained her Diploma in Child Health. She then embarked on her residency training in Public Health Medicine at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. On completion she was appointed as a consultant at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine responsible for the Health Management programme. She also holds postgraduate diplomas in Health Services Management and Occupational Health.

In 2002 she joined the KwaZulu Natal Department of Health as Principal Specialist to head the Epidemiology and Health Information Unit where among the many tasks she co-ordinated the annual antenatal seroprevalence survey and the monitoring of the antiretroviral rollout programme. Dr. Govender has a keen interest in supporting public health programmes and strengthening health systems to ensure optimum patient care. The work of CHIVA Africa is at the heart of both her interests.

Eve Freeder
Communications Manager
Eve is responsible for design and production of all communications material: written publications, collating monitoring and evaluation forms to reports, launch and management of website, re-branding of programme, circulation of teaching materials and guidelines.

In addition, Eve schedules UK teams, booking flights and disseminating relevant information to volunteers. She organises all meetings and events in London and provides administrative support where needed.



Steering Committee

  • Dr Colin Ball: Medical Coordinator
  • Colin qualified from St. Thomas' in London in 1979, and had first-hand experience working in South African paediatrics at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, in 1982 before the HIV epidemic emerged. Colin started running the paediatric side of the family HIV service at King's College initiated by Dr Karen Zwi from 1994. The service grew organically from the need to care for mostly local children of African HIV positive women many of whom found themselves displaced from Africa by circumstances such as civil unrest and war. Colin is currently the lead clinician for paediatric HIV at King's College.

  • Dr Ed Cooper: Medical Coordinator
  • Ed's main interest has been in international child health since medical school in London, 1963-8. Ed was trained in paediatrics in USA/UK and worked for 20 years in the Caribbean, about half the time in clinical service and half in research into nutrition and intestinal parasite infection. On return to London in 1996 he worked in both hospital and community paediatrics, acquiring experience in medical care for children affected by HIV. His present international activities, apart from CHIVA Africa, include the Partnership for Child Development (www.schoolsandhealth.org) and the health information campaign (www.hifa2015.org).

  • Candy Duggan: Nursing Coordinator
  • Candy is a registered general nurse (RGN), a registered sick children's nurse (RSCN) and registered health visitor (RHV). She also has an MSc in the social anthropology of childhood & child development, a post graduate diploma in health service management and is an independent nurse prescriber.
    She has been working with children and families affected by HIV since 1989 and set up the HIV family clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital with colleagues in 1991, providing comprehensive care to families diagnosed with HIV infection. She has worked as an HIV clinical nurse specialist and clinical supervisor in North East London where she also provided HIV education & training for health and social service staff.

Durban

Juliet Houghton
Programme Director
Responsible for operational management: identifies healthcare sites requiring support, builds good relationships and facilitates the matching of healthcare sites with volunteers, maintains effective partnerships with KZN Department of Health staff, attends networking events to fundraise and promote organisation.

In addition, Juliet provides regular support and training to health care professionals across KwaZulu Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Juliet is a registered general nurse (RGN) and a registered sick children's nurse (RSCN), with post-graduate qualifications in tropical nursing (dip), social anthropology of childhood & child development (MSc), and is an independent nurse prescriber. She has been working in HIV care for 19 years in government and NGO settings in the UK, Eastern Europe, North America and Southern Africa.
